After a bumpy ride over Vladimirovka’s sandy roads, we arrive at the home of eighty-five-year-old widower Mikhail Dzadzumiya. We soon experience, in its deadliest form, how rural boredom combined with Abkhazian hospitality can get out of hand. There is always a reason to drink. Only when Mikhail, with a grandchild on his shoulder, keels over against a tree does something snap. The party momentarily comes to an end. The following day we are utterly useless.
