What might that be, the attraction of what has past, the romance of desolation and destruction? Relics from the former Soviet Union speak of a lost power. Might this fascination come from a triumphalism? In any case the fascination comes from astonishment at the colourfulness, diversity and amiability of much of the former Soviet Union’s public space. It’s perhaps at odds with the clichés, but the Soviet Union didn’t entirely fall prey to the uniformity of urban design guidelines. The play areas, swimming pools and parks of the former Soviet Union can have a genuinely touching appeal through their very particular, loving approach – like, for example, the bus stops from the Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, made in his earlier years.
